The Ghoul Guides is a digital multimedia project created by Dr Lauren Nixon and myself, Dr Mary Going, that is devoted to exploring, understanding, and enjoying all of the wonders and weirdness of the Gothic.
Through our podcast the Ghoul Guides Association, our YouTube channel and talks we hope to bring the Gothic out from its dusty archives and crumbling castle, and open up Gothic Studies to an audience in a way that is accessible, informative and enjoyable for all!
GHOUL GUIDES ASSOCIATION PODCAST
The Ghoul Guides Association, or GGA if you will, is a podcast where Dr Lauren Nixon and Dr Mary Going discuss all things Gothic (or more accurately, why all things are Gothic.)
Join the Ghoul Guides as they explore the history of various topics across history and pop culture from witches to golems, chivalry to true crime, and examine their intersections with the weird and wonderful world of the Gothic.

As well as our podcast, we also make other videos about the Gothic. These include our 30 minute explainer video about what exactly is the Gothic, as well as our Halloween special videos and deep dives into summaries of Gothic books and topics that may have you asking, “But is it Gothic?”
TALKS
Over the years, Lauren and and have been delighted to be invited to deliver joint talks exploring the Gothic.
In 2021, we gave an online talk titled ‘A Weird and Wonderful Legacy: History of the Gothic with the Ghoul Guides’ for Bromley House Library in Nottingham, which explored (as you might think) the weird and wonderful history of the Gothic.
More recently, in 2024, we presented ‘Pop! Gothic: Viewing Popular Culture through the Gothic’ for Sheffield Gothic at the University of Sheffield. This talk examined popular culture from TV shows like the traitors to pop music, podcasts and even political discourse through the lens of the Gothic. You can read a review of our talk here.
